I use Earth/Air in PvE at the moment.
I'm an E/Me, and I use arcane echo on whatever skills I really need....
Either way, it's amazing what Eruption can do in the jungle....blinding all those spider means they aren't poisoning your team. I tend to run Earth for it's support (a ward, eruption, an armor) and then mostly air for a spike (Orb, Strike, and Ob.Flame (earth)). Then AEcho and Res Sig, and I'll switch off skills depending where I am for energy management..

Meh, nothing hinders Vamp Touch. I wish I could just blind a touch ranger and be done with it. Heh...

Why not go all the way? It's not that bad to command all 4 with extra secondary class bits on the side. But it does take a bit of space (hats with sups and appropriate equipment for the build's primary attribute line).
Good news for Factions too, I'd argue most if not all the new armor choices >> the current armor choices looking at the pvp list. Archmage looks incredibly cool, though the other two use the polys/re-skin 1.5k ele armor.
Archmage +hp, Battlemage +10 vs physical good for PBAOE, and that last one which name escapes me at the moment, +10 armor while enchanted - I'd probably skip that but you might have a build in mind for that too.
Ok I got a bit OT, back to the OPs thread

God does it ever... Four hats + superior runes, four sets of weapons (at least a staff and wand/focus each), every skill, four sets of armour (for boosting your other attributes and getting the max AL in each situation)...
If you go with collectors/Droks gear it isn't too expensive, although you'll only have around 15-20 free inventory spaces.
But did that stop me? No.

I agree completely on the hats and weapons. I have hats with sup runes for all four elements, plus keeping my original one with the minor fire rune for when I want more HP. I have a least partial weapon sets for each element, although it's hard to carry everything because my ideal weapon sets would include:
All the greens, useful or not
A wand/artifact set with maximum fast recharge
A Defensive collectors staff of Defense
A Hale collectors staff of Fortitude
Staff with enchantment extending mod.
Maybe the Droks crafted artifacts where applicable
Some +energy/-regeneration sets
A -2 when enchanted shield and a melee weapon with enchantment extension
Now add in the possibility of multiple useful armor sets -- not to mention some 55 HP builds -- and I'm heading towards using up a full set of inventory slots.
What I actually have at the moment is:
Basic Drok's pyromancer armor set
All four hats with sup rune
Fire hat with minor rune
Rago's Flame staff
Collectors fire wand/artifact
Defensive collectors fire staff of defense
Galigord's staff (which I use) and his rod and artifact (which I don't)
Thorgall's shield
A +19% enchantment axe mod and some scorched lodestones (betcha see where I'm going with that)
Flint's wand and artifact
Defensive collectors water staff of defense
Collectors' air wand and artifact (I think)
Hale collectors staff of fortitude (about 55 HP total)
An energy +13/regen -1 air wand
A bunch of spare staff mods in reserve
A bunch of collectible items in reserve (including alpine seeds)
I've managed to get by with those.

my ele is a bit more streamlined.. he has 5 hats (earth air fire and energy storage superiors and just a basic third eye for when i want the extra hp)
galigords stone staff. fire wand with collectors grim cesta for health and energy boost. +57 hale fire staff of fortitude. i just have the one armour set though just change the hat depending on the job. and i switch between monk mesmer or warrior depending on what im farming/fighting.

My setup is:
~5 eye's one with eash sup rune
~15K hydro armor dyed gold
~an extra pair of boots with a sup storage rune
~insighful air staff of enchanting
~insighful fire staff of enchanting
~insighful Water staff of Fortitude
~milus' pillar (defensive for ettins)
~defensive earth staff of Defence
~galigords set (staff, wand + focus)
~Air wand + storm artifact (collectors, and dyed black )
im also looking for a good earth staff in orrian skin and a new skin water staff+fire staff
you realy should try a storm artifact dyed black, its like a bunch of obsidian shards revolving around your arm
thought i'd post a screenshot of it so you could see, i removed my gloves to make it more visible

pointless. the real damage comes from obsidian flame, not stoning ...
To OP:
Earth is better than fire because:
couple of spells ignore armor
wards
armor buff
Obsidian Flesh >Spellbreaker
E/N enfeeble /stoning or enervating charge (air)+stoning >met shower on monk bosses without condition removal
